In my experience, most (automotive) people will be of the opinion that speed limits are too restrictive because they are all such awesome drivers and should really be making the big bucks in Formula One. But then they also generally put a couple of these at their driveways, because everyone else sucks at driving, of course:

I often find myself staring at the flying pelicans on my commute in to work... we all do it. When we’re super engaged in the task we’re much better at something than when we’re just haphazardly moving along. Most drivers view it as a task, rather than an activity, and allocate less attention to it.

Driving is proof that doing something daily doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting better at that task. It just means you’re gonna be more relaxed and complacent about the rigors of it when you do it.

A road engineer I know told me that speed limits, outside of residential areas, are generally set at the speed at which 75% of the travelers on it drive at or below.

I never said it was a good rule. Just that what we were talking about didn't necessarily tear it down.

But a new Princeton study tears that theory down. In a meta-analysis of 88 studies on deliberate practice, the researchers found that practice accounted for just a 12% difference in performance in various domains.

What's really surprising is how much it depends on the domain:
• In games, practice made for a 26% difference
• In music, it was a 21% difference
• In sports, an 18% difference
• In education, a 4% difference
• In professions, just a 1% difference

But I can see how you interpreted my answer that I was advocating that everyone should be Mario Andretti after 10k hours of driving. Everybody would be significantly better at driving with 10k hours of focused practice on skills and not just commuting. My point was, and I think the point of the rule in general, is that by just doing something doesn't mean you're advancing at it.

We all know developers with Senior in their title, and who have been working in the industry for a long time, and who we'd never ever consult or accept their code because its shit and they've only ever progressed on duration of employment not advancement of skills.
