I bought a Mac Pro
No, not the new model. A trash can. I always knew I would eventually buy one, and today I came across a refurb dealer offering, among many others, a 12-core model with dual D700’s, 1TB storage, 64GB RAM. So, pretty much decked out, top specs. Officially, because apparently the RAM ceiling is actually 128GB. I asked for a quote, but unless they charge something outrageous, I’ll probably buy it.

I've always wanted a Trash Pro just to have it. The retail price is still way too high for what you actually get. Macsales.com has one right now for $2150.

I also want a G4 Cube.

I might dig the Cube out of its box for a family photo.

Back then, I paid more for the 17” LCD display than for the Cube itself.

I bought a cube/monitor combo off ebay about 7 years ago but the monitor stand broke during shipping so I had to send the whole package back.

I had the 17" CRT in the clear case during those times. Good times. The screen was quite flat, but it sure gets dusty in there.

I passed on the (G4-upgraded) Cube to my parents, who used it until only a few years ago, at which point it came home in its original packaging. The spring-loaded foot in the display went limp at some point. I really should see if I can fix that.

RE: I bought a Mac Pro
Well, I bought it. They’re quite a bit bigger than one would estimate from pictures (I remember thinking that when I first saw one in the flesh, too).

Now to find a use for it. My Mac server park currently comprises a Mac Mini 2011 (dual core i5), a Mac Mini 2012 (quad core i7), and now the twelve core Mac Pro 2013. For historic reasons, or rather me being too lazy to set things up differently, the slowest Mini is the workhorse. I really should offload some of the more taxing duties (transcoding video, first and foremost) on the other two.

Eventually, the plan is to run ESXi on the Pro, and virtualise some or all of my macOS server duties. I’m also in need of some serious Thunderbolt storage, because FireWire 800 is quickly becoming the weakest link in the whole setup.

I have to admit that I'm kinda jealous. Those looks like cool machines.
But am also glad that I've significantly reduced the number of computers in the house to: 1 linux tower, 15" 2015 MBP, 13" 2018 MBP (work), 2 Raspberry Pis.
Seeing all those threads makes me want to upgrade the tower... a 16 core Ryzen 5950x is Drool

I’m pondering whether I should try to laser-etch the case with the Chinesium CNC. Probably not.
