Time to RAGE AGAINST THE CAKE
Supreme Court sides with Colorado baker who refused to make wedding cake for same-sex couple
Quote:The Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, in one of the most closely watched cases of the term.
In a 7-2 decision, the justices set aside a Colorado court ruling against the baker -- while stopping short of deciding the broader issue of whether a business can refuse to serve gay and lesbian people. The opinion was penned by Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is often the swing justice in tight cases.
The narrow ruling here focused on what the court described as anti-religious bias on the Colorado Civil Rights Commission when it ruled against baker Jack Phillips.
"The Commission’s hostility was inconsistent with the First Amendment’s guarantee that our laws be applied in a manner that is neutral toward religion," Kennedy wrote in his majority opinion.

It's a tricky thing to make laws against discrimination that also protect religious freedom.

Interesting question I saw this morning. Would it be acceptable for an lgbt heart surgeon to refuse service to one of these bigoted cake makers?

Logically, no. The LGBT surgeon doesn't have a religious belief that requires discrimination against a bigot.

It's dumb, though. We shouldn't be protecting religion in this way.

I don't think the cake maker refused to make cake for gay people, just gay weddings which for religious people is a religious ceremony. He'd probably make them all the gay birthday dick cakes they want.
Bday
(seemed appropriate since we don't have a dick cake, obviously an oversight that needs correction)

Seriously though, it's a tricky thing to force someone to participate in something against their religion.

RE: Time to RAGE AGAINST THE CAKE
I’m not buying a cake from the guy. And I don’t care who he sells to or doesn’t. I think he has the right to be a bigot.

If the surgeon can reconcile her decision with her oath if service, I’m OK with that, too.

It’s not about what you care about, it’s how it allows idiots to marginalize others.

It seems straightforward to me. If you want to put your religious beliefs ahead of business regulations, incorporate as a religious nonprofit. Otherwise, follow anti discrimination laws.

Barbara, please.

Let's drop the pretext that this has anything to do with religious freedom. This is simply about exercising the right to refuse business to anyone for whatever fucking reason the business owner wants.

Salute I agree.

But forcing a person to provide service against their will isn't a recipe for success.

RE: Time to RAGE AGAINST THE CAKE
Another false equivalency. You think that this so called marginalization relates at all to people who have had to literally fight to be treated equally?

I think this deserves another Barbara Please.

*Edit:* I should put forth that I'm now much more interested in your view of a marginalized conservative/republican than I am about the original intent of this thread.

Tolerant is a better word, you have to allow others to live the way they want.
That means gays live in peace and get married but they can't force others to support them in their choices.
You are also free to speak out against things you disagree with, just not make laws forbidding them provided they pose no harm/consenting adults yada yada.
Freedom and liberty for all means freedom and liberty for all.
