Begun this trade war has
Predictions:
This will last maybe a month. Trump will negotiate some minor changes to quotas or something and then end the tariffs. He'll wave his dick about what a great negotiator he is, redhats will praise him for "being tough" and protecting American jobs. There will be little actual change in jobs, long-term.

Bonus prediction: People who moaned about Obamacare raising a pizza's cost by fourteen cents will say that a 25% tariff on steel won't really hurt anything.

Your predictions look about right.

I would add that this episode was clearly written by Lucas. The repetitive dialogue and weak plot reek of it.

I'm confident that the MAGAts will feel the tariffs pretty quick, since the only things we make in 'murica anymore are porn and autistic kids.

Quote:As he prepared to depart early from the G-7 summit in Charlevoix, Canada, to head to Singapore ahead of his planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump delivered an ultimatum to foreign leaders, demanding that their countries reduce trade barriers for the U.S. or risk losing market access to the world's largest economy.

"They have no choice. I'll be honest with you, they have no choice," Trump told reporters at a news conference, adding that companies and jobs had left the U.S. to escape trade barriers abroad. "We're going to fix that situation. And if it's not fixed, then we're not going to deal with these countries."

“We’re the piggy bank that everybody is robbing,” Trump added at one point. “And that ends.”

So what part of the "Art of the Deal" says you should make threats that literally everyone knows you can't actually follow through on?

Meh, we'll just match his tariffs dollar for dollar. My company has big international clients so it doesn't affect me directly, and the endgame has us gaining control back over our economy and having more local (and non-US) customers and suppliers.

Both Microsoft, Apple, and Google are US companies, so we will need to steal one of those companies to keep our phones and computers supported.

Indirectly It won't be beneficial either. But worrying about it isn't going to help. If Trump burns off all the US's allies, we will simply increase trade between ourselves to replace the USA-shaped hole. It won't be a perfect match, but it will be something we can adapt to.

By reading that I’m supposed to think that I t’s all Canada laying tariffs on the US?

Quote:Trump tweeted, "Canada charges the U.S. a 270% tariff on Dairy Products! They didn’t tell you that, did they? Not fair to our farmers!"

That number is a reasonable estimate of Canada’s dairy tariffs, which are high by any standard. That said, the United States has recently run a sizable trade surplus with Canada in dairy products, driven by a strong business in a milk product that was unaffected by the high tariffs. Trump also glosses over the fact that the United States imposes its own trade barriers on certain American-made products.

The statement is basically accurate but needs clarification, so we rate it Mostly True.

Yeah, there’s no doubt that there’s room for improvement, but this behavior like a petulant child and claiming the US as a victim is bullshit.

That is pretty accurate. There are real problems with many of our trade relationships but ham-fisted tariffs on politically opportune items are not the solution.

RE: Begun this trade war has
The milk tariffs are because we have a quota system and it only functions if we shut out ALL foreign milk, since all produced supply is consumed locally with no importing or exporting. Milk is pretty cheap here and the farmers are content with it. A single State can easily make more milk then all Canadian producers combined.

Don't forget, the US is more than capable of taking over and destroying other markets just by it's sheer size.

Also Canadian beef is healthier because our livestock regulations are applied consistently and stricter.
My logic is infallible. Resistance is futile.

https://www.realagriculture.com/2018/02/...ew-report/

Quote:Comparing government support for Canadian versus American dairy farmers is not a simple black and white process. While Canada’s dairy sector operates under a regulated supply management system, the U.S. government’s support for its dairy farmers is less direct.

Support, in its various forms, equaled 73 percent of U.S. dairy farmers’ market returns in 2015, according to a report published by a Canadian trade consulting firm on Thursday.

The 588-page study by Grey, Clark, Shih and Associates — commissioned by Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) — says the American government contributed around $22.2 billion in direct and indirect subsidies to the dairy sector in 2015.

Lead author Peter Clark shared the numbers at DFC’s annual policy conference in Ottawa this week.

“The support is completely ignored,” he said. “When it comes to farm support, the U.S. has the deepest pockets; deeper even than the European Union. Our study provides detail nationally, and on a state basis, the losses to U.S. dairy farmers. USDA data reveals that for more than a decade, U.S. farm gate prices for milk fail to cover costs of production.”

Based solely on the USDA’s national average farm-gate price and national average costs of production, Clark says American dairy farmers lost money every year from 2005 to 2016.

The report figures support granted to U.S. dairy farmers in 2015 represented approximately C$0.35 per litre — almost three-quarters of producers’ revenue.

The calculations include government expenditures outside of dairy programs, such as subsidized irrigation water, nutrition programs and government loan programs. For example, the benefits of state and local irrigation programs are estimated at $2.1 billion.

Clark calls the subsidies “an 800-pound gorilla in the room,” with the U.S. dairy industry demanding increased access to Canada’s supply managed market in the current North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations.

“U.S. politicians have been quick to demonize Canada for its different system. Fair trade is in the eye of the beholder. For example, some 41 countries, including the U.S., has WTO approved tariff-rate quotas. The U.S. challenged Canada’s rights to use their quotas within NAFTA over 20 years ago. The U.S. lost. But the U.S. does tend to cast a very broad net when they complain about trade,” said Clark.

The report follows similar analysis conducted by Grey, Clark, Shih and Associates in 1990, 1998, 2003, 2005 and 2010. In 2010, the firm found U.S. government support equaled 62 percent of American dairy farmer returns, totalling nearly $20 billion.
