So, who is buying a new iPad? - Gippy - 03-19-2019

I have to admit, I’m thinking about a iPad mini again.

Not it.

Is it one that uses the Apple Pencil or one that uses the Apple Pencil?

because, you know, the new iPads (not the new iPad) and some older iPads only support the Apple pencil while other iPads only support the Apple Pencil.

Not buying a new iPad, I bought a 10" Pro in 2017 and a Mini last year. Before that, I used the iPad 3 (first Retina model) that I bought in 2011. I expect my current ones to also last me at least four to five years.

As tempting as the new models are, and they are, there'll be even better ones by the time I am up for an upgrade.

My old 3, by the way, is now our cats' iPad.

I'm not buying an iPad until I can use it to write code.

Mac Pro holdout here

I think that apple developers must be coding on iPads now, given how often they've DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED the platform over the last few years.

The "new" iMacs are tempting, though... Eight cores, hmmmmmmm.…

I have 2017 model iMac. I'm certain that the Fusion Drive is a bigger performance bottleneck than the processor.

Yup. Still faster than my mid-2011 iMac, and it doesn't have flaky wi-fi either. But my next iMac will be entirely SSD. My MacBook Air (mid-2012) starts up faster and opens most apps faster than my now two year-old iMac.

This sounds more like a personal project than anything Apple has to "fix".

No.  That's a stretch and you know it.  I've read the ssh-based workflows that allow you to use an app to write code on a different computer, but that's bullshit.

I'd have bought a Surface if it weren't for Windows.

Yeah, when I put a SSD into my 2010 MBP it was like a new machine with an old display.  I should have splurged for the SSD when I bought this beast because the replacement instructions are brutal. But Apple's SSD upcharge is pretty silly.  Oh well, live and learn.  But I could still duct tape an external SSD to back of this thing and I'd never see it, so I have a path forward.

I was thinking of other abominations like cloud editors and/or VNC. Wtf

RE: So, who is buying a new iPad? - Gippy - 03-21-2019

Ubuntu runs on Surface machines. Just sayin'.
I *could* do my job on Linux. There's just niceties on OS X that I'll take if I can get 'em.

I'm in the same boat.  Also, I am entirely disinterested in figuring out why some feature of the OS isn't working correctly on the hardware.  Configuring stuff is not nearly as fun as it used to be.

RE: So, who is buying a new iPad? - Gippy - 03-21-2019

Yeah. I also like consistency and interopability. So it’s hard to just have one machine that is different.
