PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - roo - 01-16-2019

I bought a Chemex pour over coffee... er... carafe?  I don't know what it's called.  It's not a maker.  I'm the maker.  It's like... a jar.

But the coffee is great.  I don't know that it's so much better than drip coffee that it's worth the time commitment, but it's my preference right now.

No, I didn't get the hand-blown one, so beddie would still disapprove.  He'd disapprove of me using a designer hand blown jar too, but I suppose that's why we loved him.

[attachment=395]

yeah, that's me in the reflection.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - Jehannum - 01-16-2019

I use a French press, because it tastes different than drip, and I like it.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - roo - 01-16-2019

I was thinking french press was the way to go, but then I read that the paper filter affects cholesterol in some unknown but possibly beneficial way... so...

Aeropress looks interesting too.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - agedgruel - 01-16-2019

Beddie would disapprove of me most. I only drink a cup or two a day so I use a Keurig. I have a reusable filter, so I’m not completely unredeemable.

You're banned!

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - Gippy - 01-16-2019

I miss my Chemex pot.
I have a french press, too.
But I've been lazy, so we just use a regular coffee maker.
We also drink Starbucks Veranda. Its what the monkey likes, and I drink anything that's not decaf, so...

So I guess that last one means that I should be banned too.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - roo - 01-16-2019

Sometimes a cup's a cup, I get it.

If I were to use Illy's coffee would that make me a poseur or fancy?

Veranda is Starbucks' only redeeming bean.

I shop a local place that ticks all my SJW boxes - fair trade, organic, non-coop farmed beans.  However, when I can't get that (for whatever reason - travelling, they're closed, or the wife is hankering for a milkshake instead of a coffee), I usually have a large black veranda roast coffee from Starbucks.  It's the only roast they do that doesn't taste like burnt ass.

I guess it would depend on whether you grind it yourself or not :p

Likewise. Mainly because it’s small, simple and requires no disposable papers. I recently upgraded to a double skinned metal one, which is fabulous as I can make one large pot and it keeps coffee warm long enough for several cups.

I’m a total coffee philistine. I have a nespresso machine and can’t really appreciate the differences between pods. I just like a strong cup of coffee.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - agedgruel - 01-17-2019

While camping last spring I tried freeze-dried Folgers. You haven't had extra hairy burnt ass until you've had that. It was in the cabin where we stayed; I understand why it was left behind.

If you like hairy burnt ass, have you tried Gippy?

The compactness and lack of required counter space was definitely an attraction to the press on my part too.

The hipster and coffee snob cred was just a bonus.

Gippy = Ed McMahon

So your paper filter vs. cholesterol thing made for some interesting reading.

Not interesting enough that I'm switching back to a drip machine or chemex, but out of curiosity, have you seen decreased cholesterol levels since you used it?

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - Alien - 01-18-2019

I only drink two or three cups of coffee (at home) a week, so I got me one of these and don’t give any thought to the effects of coffee on cholesterol levels:

I prefer my cowboy coffee, fewer moving parts.

The gauge makes me wonder if you can manually set the pressure on yours, and if so, what's the maximum Bar for steam injection.

I don't know how I feel about this. It's not a fit for me, but it's interesting, and yet it isn't.  So enigmatic.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - Alien - 01-18-2019

It’s a temperature gauge.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - FuturDreamz - 01-18-2019

At what point should I just use the ultrafine setting on my grinder and just make a dirty shot?

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - Alien - 01-18-2019

We’re considering a Mocca Master for making drip filter coffee, and partly for nostalgic reasons, too.

I’m also sure we have a french press stowed away somewhere. And then of course Moka Express pots in various sizes.

RE: PLEASE NOTE: CHEMEX - Gippy - 01-19-2019

I've been wanting to get an electric percolator. But everything I find that is the size I want just feels cheap...
