Happy belated birthday!  Sorry to hear about the mugging.  I'm not sure what I'd do if someone tried to mug with a knife.  I guess it would depend on the surroundings.

I made it out physically ok so I call it a win. The guy was arrested not 5 minutes after I was on the phone with 911. The part that scared me the most was that our daughter was in harms way and I didn't know if he would attack her. Needless to say I will be more vigilant when parking my car on the street going forward.

RE: Attention whore thread
Because I have a comically-sized master bedroom, we have decided to turn half of it into a sitting area. I've already got the armchair and love seat, but it needs a table, so I decided to make one.

Everything else in the house is hickory, so the table will be as well: a glue-up panel with breadboard ends, on some 2x2 square tube aluminum legs (haven't built them yet, but I have a pretty good idea what I'll do, and it'll give me a chance to use my friend's TIG welder). Breadboard ends are a loose tenon in a long mortise, pinned with three dowels. The middle dowel is glued all the way through, the outer dowels are tight in the end piece, but pass through longer slotted holes in the tenon, to allow the wood to grow and shrink seasonally across the grain. I built almost half an inch of slop into the loose tenon for wood movement. I also discovered that my router is only powerful enough to get through about 1/4" deep passes when cutting 5/16" slots in hickory.

Glue up, before paring back the breadboard tenon:

Yesterday I got one end on:

I now know that I really do need a planer and a jointer, as the glue up isn't as tight as it could have been, and those things are next on the list of things to buy for my wood shop.

I think the last mechanic who worked on this engine hated the owner. My best friend so far has been an old school impact driver and a rubber mallet. EVERYTHING is way too tight. And I eventually was stopped dead because I couldn't make the right adaptation to drive a 1/4" socket. So I broke down and picked up a Dewalt 20v impact driver and drill set. It did the job nicely, and now I have a cordless driver. :D

I also accidentally got oil on the floor. Not much, but enough to where I feel like I'm gonna slip every time I'm on that patch of concrete. I've cleaned it 3 times now.

Leave some powder laundry detergent on top of the stain overnight.

What's the goal for breaking down that bimmer?

RE: Attention whore thread
Not a bimmer. Those are both 2015. No need for that.

This is a ‘72 CB350. Had little compression on the left and the final drive seal needs replacing. Electrical needs modernizing (it currently has a regulator from a John Deere lawn tractor that I put on just to keep it running). So I figured just rip it apart as something to do instead of playing video games or pretending that I like learning Scala.

The rebuild will cost more than its worth but it is a fun bike and I have the accountant’s blessing to spend the money ;) just replacing the stator and points with modern charging and ignition will be huge.

I’ve also got the rest of the bike down to the frame. I’ll get that painted black. Get everything painted black. Then ride the piss out of it. I’ll probably put some pod air filters on it so that it looks cool, and then spend the rest of my time trying to get the carbs running smooth.

So I got a speeding ticket.

$450 down the drain Goth

I got nabbed on the 16th by a camera but it just arrived today. I was hoping that flash was NOT a camera but nope I was not lucky.

I hope you feel safer with the cameras in place. Because the law is for safety, and enforcement is for safety. Right?

You lose your license if you get too many, so yeah.

Also, when a cop pulls you over you get demerits AND a fine.

No, it's very real.  The question you might consider asking is whether or not the law is about safety or about revenue.  Is it the will of the people to enforce the speed limit in order to keep the roads safe, or is there another purpose?

So that has to be mutually exclusive?

RE: Attention whore thread
I think you're reading too much into it.  Of course they are not mutually exclusive.  It's perfectly possible that a democracy enforce a law in a manner that provides revenue at the expense of those who endanger others.  The question I suggest you ponder is if a speeding camera is designed to protect the people and/or uphold the will of the people.  Additionally, you might ponder whether or not there is an ulterior motive for the particular brand of enforcement.

But since we're getting into it...

You may be a fan of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight.  He aired a special on a suspect law enforcement practice.  Not regarding cameras, but regarding suspicious traffic stops leading to civil forfeiture. He pointed out that law officers are enforcing the law in such a way that may be considered unfair.  It's legal, of course.  You can decide for yourself whether or not it's just. [edit: I can't make this just a link because it only embeds, so I broke the url: https://youtu. be/ 3kEpZWGgJks]

You may also be familiar with certain municipalities implementing red light cameras with yellow lights that are entirely too short for a motorist to stop in time.  Some experts have called the practice racketeering, others have called it unconstitutional.  You'll have to choose for yourself how you feel about it.

But back to the speeding camera as a means of enforcement, I can't speak to where you live, but my experience in the Northeast is that the electorate does not seem to agree with posted speed limits, and that causes me to ponder the law, and the investments made in enforcing it.  I wonder why a municipality would invest millions of dollars to make sure people don't do what they always do.  Of course, my intellectual curiosity is my own, and others have different interests.

I suppose it's possible that you typically operate your motor vehicle within posted speed limits and would be grateful if everyone else did too.  Though, I would find that to be an uncommon perspective.

RE: Attention whore thread
I was actually just seeing how many one line responses it took for someone to write an essay.

I actually agree that traffic cameras are a source of systemic abuse. Like you eluded to: a fundraiser. But at the same time, when the cops are out doing it for month end quota it’s the same effect AND you lose points.

But, ok, say the will of the people is to go faster than the posted speed limit. Ok. If only we lived in a world where the electorate could petition the system.

RE: Attention whore thread
And, yes, speed limits are hard to limit yourself to when they’re low. But in general around here I agree with the safety limit aspect of the posted limits. It just sucks that for cars they’re pretty good. A lot of cars shouldn’t be tearing through mountain roads like the one we always take home. But it’s also frustrating when you’re the exception to the rule and can safely travel at modestly higher speeds. But I also feel like there’s a positive psychological effect of people wanting to go faster but not that much faster so as they get a massive ticket. I think this plays in to the posted limits. I’d much rather see slower limits than too fast limits.

If you really feel the need to drive super fast you need to find an alternate outlet. If you habitually play the double-the-speed-limit game then you’re entering that knowing full well what the consequences are. Some would call that personal responsibility.
