RE: Every fucking time, without fail...
Five days in at the new job, and Microsoft retardation is already driving me batty (I just love setting up a new Windows workstation. There's new Redmond jackassery, every time!): Did you know that, according to Microsoft, Whit Sunday is actually ona Thursday, this year? Seriously.

So they provide a file with Outlook, that has holidays in it for a bunch of countries over the course of a bunch of years. Of course, this is some sort of retarded text file that supports no sort of recurrence, so the holidays are listed one by one, for each country, for each locale setting, for each year. I kid you not. And then they got the dates wrong. So Outlook helpfully offers to add holidays to your calendar, when you first set it up. Yay! Let me add the ones for the Netherlands, and, for good measure, also the UK, Germany and Italy, so I will know when my colleagues in London, Stuttgart, Rome and Milan are off work. That'll come in handy!

Only, the holidays are on the wrong dates. And since these are actually imported into the calendar as hard-coded events, they cannot be unloaded or changed externally, or whatever. No, they're in the calendar. Fuck you. Go change them by hand. That is actually what Microsoft's support page on the matter says, in so many words. Mind you, this issue has apparently been known since 2012, and not fixed. They didn't even see need to provide a list of the dates they got wrong. Of course not. What, you think Microsoft should expend the effort to remedy this? Fuck you, user, you're forced by your IT department to use Outlook, so we're not going to bother helping you. We pocketed your money, our job is done. Here's a four examples of dates that we got wrong, now go find and correct the rest of them yourself.

Windows 7 has this awesome feature in the file explorer called "preview". And when you double click a file in said Explorer, it'll both be selected for preview (first click, supposedly), and then launched in its associated application (second click). Only, that second click action will FAIL, because the preview feature has just locked your file for edit. I kid you not.

ALSO: no Dell computer on this planet can charge an iPad. Laptop, desktop, docking station: fuck you, nearly every tablet user on the planet. No power for you!

Were I in charge of that chickenshit outfit, I would close it down and give the money back to the stockholders, or something.

My Asus can charge an iPad, but it has these special USB2.0 ports that use special drivers to output higher voltages. Laptop manufacturers only have to meet the minimum specification and may choose to stick to it to conserve battery life.

And as for your first problem, have you changed your view to thumbnail instead of three pane? That should help. Three pane is not the standard view.

Also, Dell is privately owned.
My logic is infallible. Resistance is futile.

Looks like you have a bright future being escalated to second-tier tech support.

PROTIP: if you design a screen that says, "configuring updates, 100% complete" and then go on to display that screen for twenty minutes while configuring updates, you might want to reconsider that percentage.

Lenovo T460 has a nice, usable(!) trackpad, the first ever in a Windows computer as far as I can tel, and a good keyboard. Shame it's a German layout, though.

Windows still sucks in all the ways we've come to appreciate. Like restarting without warning for a (trivial) software install while you're out to lunch.

RE: Every fucking time, without fail...
every Apple device manual I ever read, starts out with congratulating the user on his purchase and extols the joys the new gadget will bring to one's life. Not so with a Windows laptop. It delves straight into a fourteen page horror story anout the many ways your new laptop can kill or maim you.

I think this is exemplary to the different views on technology that both camps hold.

Well sure. One device has to be very careful to convince you that your purchase was a good one, while the other one dismisses that and jumps straight to the quick start guide for the technically illiterate.

RE: Every fucking time, without fail...
"Quick start guide", huh? Lessee:
  • The computer may cause skin burns.
  • The AC adapter may cause skin burns.
  • Pouring Coke into your keyboard will destroy the computer. And may kill you.
  • Cables may break your neck. Possibly killing you.
  • Even though it's a portable computer, moving it may destroy your data.
  • Don't drop cartoonish heavy weights into your computer.
  • Putting your computer in a bag may burn your house down. You and your family might get killed.
  • There's a cooling fan in your computer that may chop off your fingers.
  • Upgrading the RAM may burn you. And possibly kill you.
  • The battery may explode at any time, killing you, and burning down your house thereby killing your family.
  • There's another battery in the computer, which is liable to explode. You'll be dead.
  • The computer's screen may blind you.
  • the computer can play sounds and music, which may make you go deaf.
  • The computer came wrapped in a plastic bag, which may kill you or your children.
