Freedom!
So, I'm gonna get my motorcycle license. I'm going the predictable route and taking one of those pre-certification classes.

I have not decided on my first set of wheels yet. Hopefully they come with a bike attached.

Discuss.

RE: Freedom!
I'd love a motorcycle if there were dedicated motorcycle roads. But as it is, I think it's too dangerous.

6'1" and a slightly overweight 240lbs.

Currently have my eye on a 1983 Suzuki 440 LTD for just under $1K. I'll drop it once or twice and then get a better bike.

RE: Freedom!
is your class bring your own bike or loaner bike?

If they let you play with bikes there, I would wait on buying.

RE: Freedom!
Yeah, they provide bikes. At my size I figure I'm gonna want at least 500cc in a long term bike.

The class supplies 500cc bikes.

And, yes, I definitely plan to wait until after the course to purchase.

RE: Freedom!
You absolutely want a 500. Anything less with your mass will be woefully inadequate. A word that does not typically apply to you ;)

IMISSMYBIKE Whaa

(Also, insert into post doesn't seem to work on mobile...)

Just fer shitsngiggles, I went to the Harley dealership. As if I'd buy one. But I tried out a fat boy low that fit me perfectly. $17,000 for a HARLEY? I don't frakkin think so. But it was sweet.

Ya. 17K for a bike is way too much. Can't fathom paying more than 6K right now.

Stay away from cafe racers. At least until you're used to riding. The short handlebars make them a bit twitchy.

Also, crotch-rockets are silly things. I think you'd do well to start out with something in the 500-750 range. Don't go bigger. The power-to-weight ratio gets downright silly for a beginner.

Og, that honda pic you posted is about what I'm thinking as far as style. Just standard or cruiser suits me. No crotch rockets. Definitely not a cafe racer...

I'm not getting any younger. It has to be somewhat comfy ;)

That was my 1980 CX500. Butt-ugly, top-heavy and INDUSTRIBLE. Has a curb weight of about 700lbs, iirc. It spoiled me so now I prefer to stay away from anything not shaft-driven [insert PEANUS jokes here]. V-twin, liquid-cooled. Sounded delicious. I'll bet you can find something similar in SF.

it had been stolen, and i actually got it back about 6 years later. oil change, spritz of wd-40 in each cylinder, new battery and it fired up on the first crank. then I pussed-out and allowed the troll to badger me into selling it. such a fucking idiot.

Just don't do what some guy at work did. he bought this bike, and about a week later apparently high-sided over a curb and got a concussion (yes, he had a brain bucket on.) No more riding. the bike was ok. just some scuffs. Shakefist
