Need a portable WiFi-to-WiFi router
It's happened again: I am stuck in a hotel with retarded WiFi. You know, the kind where they print out a slip with a login and password that'll give you access to WiFi for a set amount of time... on a single device. Yeah, I travel with at least three; sometimes more. Plus, I'm done with all that pop-up and rerouting crap that eternally messes up everything I do on my MacBook/iPhone/iPad.

So, I need a small router that I can connect to any network (at the very least WiFi; Ethernet would be nice and I'm sure I can dream up a scenario where I need it to connect to a mobile network, too). Being able to pipe everything through a VPN that I can set up at home would be nice, too.

Barring buying a Raspberry Pi or the like and setting it up like that, do any of you know about such devices that'll do what I want out of the box with minimal tinkering?

Internet sharing on your Mac or Personal Hotspot on your iPhone will allow for one additional device... maybe you could daisy chain them. Not sure. What about sharing your internet connection from your Mac with an Airport Express?

RE: Need a portable WiFi-to-WiFi router
iDevices can only share their 4G connections; the MacBook (Air) can share its internet connection, but not WiFi-to-WiFi. For some reason, sharing the Mac's WiFi connection over Bluetooth is unreliable, even though I have used it to some degree of satisfaction in the past.

On a more anal retentive note, I'm slowly collecting a long, long list of never again used WiFi networks that clog up my networking preferences.

Basically, I want a set-and-forget solution that'll save me from going through the whole song and dance of setting up sharing very time I land in a new hotel. Oh, I don't need to see other guests' devices and the printers at reception on the local network, either, and I sure as fuck could do without them seeing mine.

RE: Need a portable WiFi-to-WiFi router
When I need to do this I plug in the phone via the lightning cable and share the network via USB.
I don't know if they're in Urp, but we have MiFi here and it's basically a roaming 4g wifi hotspot.

You could also do most of what you want with an Airport Express if you're mostly just concerned with the sharing of a hotel wifi connection and walling yourself off from the riff-raff.
The chaos army seems suspiciously well organized.

I bought this:

It should do everything I asked for, except being a 4G hotspot. Which both my iPhone and my iPad are, so meh.

It works. I just did the bare minimum setup, and all our devices are set up to know the network and connect to it. DNS-level ad blocking as a bonus. I may delve further into all the nitty-gritty later.
