Also, you're gonna have to refresh my memory on Locke. I haven't kept up on my 17th century philosophy.

Yeah, tough titties. That's how it works everywhere in the world.  What?  You think your vision is a utopia for everyone? What do you say to those who would add creation theory to it?  Tough titties, right?

Locke says that man in nature is free — free, but alone and vulnerable to others. Men therefore willingly join society for protection but sacrifice some liberty in doing so. And by virtue of living in society, you sign a social contract binding you to its rules.  If you don't like it, tough titties or move away.  If the majority doesn't like it, then start a revolution.

RE: STFU about meals on wheels already
I'm gonna have to do reading to really get in to that (not that I really want to, those old philosophers are a bit windbaggy) but do you really think that 17th century thinking stands up unmodified at current scale? The world today ain't what it was when that ol fog brain out pen to paper. Can you honestly translate his ideals, unmodified, in to a modern society and to society at this scale and complexity?

And do you honestly think that one of these societies, should it decide to be cannibals, or enslave people, or like to blow everybody up, should just be left to do that? That human suffering should be ignored under the guise of "they can move away if they really want to". Could they also just stop being poor if they put their minds to it?

Correct.  So now your money goes to ending abortion.

I'll win some and lose some. That's why I'm on the inter webs. To  Whaa about it.
I am pretty confident, though, that if all this spending were at the state level, I'd have the same win/lose ratio. But the upside is that California would be living in the future with all the cash it saves by not floating the red loser states. I may not be as rosy about it were I still in Colorado.

At least New Mexico is making a return on those dollars, since they all end up at the two national labs, the air force bases, or WSMR.

As a species, we haven't evolved all that much in 300 years.  What do you suppose would happen if society collapsed?  Why do you suppose rioting and looting still occur?  Yeah, I think that the concept of man in nature holds up.

And look around the globe.  Look at China's record on human rights.  What are you doing about that?  Posting about how it sucks from your made in China iPhone?  Didn't you tell them that their using outmoded ideals to run their society?

I tried to tell them. They didn't listen.
But governmental policy seems to have more sway... not perfect, but much more.
