Seems you'd be better off waiting for the GTX 1060

Hmm, thanks.

I'm still half-way trying to make sense of the whole graphics card market for my kids' computer. I don't really want to spend a whole lot of money on it.

Honestly I think it'll be fine. But I'd wait and see. I'm considering the 1060 for my theoretical build.

Would you consider an amd APU? I don't know how powerful of a system you're planning for your kids.
My logic is infallible. Resistance is futile.

I've already got the machine, it's an i3 4330.

I think it's got a GeForce of some stripe in it right now. It was rated marginally better than the Intel 4600 graphics that shipped with the i3.

Eh, all you would need is a $200-250 card. An older model might have dropped in price.

Here's the system I am hoping to eventually build.

I'm aware there's an incompatibility alert. The site doesn't realize the mobo has a wifi card slot.

After I have a job, pay down my debt, get an apartment, balance my budget, and save up for it of course. And I'll make final adjustments based on what's available and cheapest at the retailers I'll buy from. So hopefully next year.

Yeah, I'm sure that's the truth, but I'm so woefully unaware of graphics cards that I'm not sure which is the "good" low end card, and which one is just last generation's mid-range.

The only graphics card tech I'm aware of for the last 10 years is whether it's got OpenCL/CUDA processing onboard.

All I can really say is figure out what games they want to play, then look up which cards have minimum 30fps (more is better, but anything below can be uncomfortable) when playing those games.

Nvidia's a little simpler, the last two digits are the power level (a 980 is more powerful than a 970 which is more powerful than a 940, etc) and the first two or three is the generation (a 1080 is newer than a 980, which is newer than a 780 - the 800 series is mobile only).
It seems that generations usually raise the power level by one series (a 1070 is about as powerful as a 980, a 970 is about as powerful as a 770, etc)

I'm guessing that as long as you have a x60 or higher you will be fine, but you might get by with a cheaper card.

AMD's a little more confusing.

I remember upgrading my Cube from Rage128 to GeForce 3. Carmageddon 2 with all options turned on! Yeah, baby!
