RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
Yeah. During both of my stays I had a room to myself with a big fat sign on the wall and the floor that said "scrub in and scrub out" and people were required to wear masks.

It all felt a little surreal that way.

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
After they gutted me like a fish, I shared a room with a dude who had some kind of flesh eating staph infection in his knee. I was so motivated to get out of there that I beat the spread (usually it takes 7 days for the ol' bowels to come back online after being ripped out and reinserted, mine did it in 5).

Didn't stop me from getting a nasty abscess in the incision around my belly button, but I wasn't about to spend an hour longer in there than necessary.

Oh yeah, who's got two thumbs and a clear CT? This guy.

Two years post-diagnosis, almost to the day. Woot.

Did they give you a poop transplant for your C.Diff?

Also late to the party, and I am sorry that anyone has to go through this, especially you and Puddles. I can't design posties like Earl Grey but I can send you many positive vibes.

Hey Gip, hope you feel better soon. Does it help to know that there are people who care, who are thinking about you and Puddles often, and would like to help? Well, we do! Smile

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
Well, fuck.

Got my CT results. Tumors are the same size. So now we wait a while then do a PET scan to see if the tumors are dead or active. If they're dead, then great... If they're not... Well, fuck me.

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
ok, then, so let's focus on what's next.  When is the PET scan, and what do they do after that? And can I offer you some flights to any place that specializes in this thing?  NY, Atlanta, wherever?

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
So, my money's on them being teratomas.

I bet they put you through an RPLND, remove the lymphatic tissue, and the pathology all comes back teratoma.

But I would probably head for MD Anderson for any of that work to be done.

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
Thanks for thinking of us. Wuv Also, Jeh, I'm really happy to hear your latest scan is clear.

I think it's safe to say Gips and I are both dumbstruck at this point. After hearing from so many nurses and doctors that Gips' type of cancer is easily treatable and "sensitive to chemotherapy," I just can't wrap my brain around the possibility that nothing has changed. I have to believe that his tumors, while they may not have shrunk, are no longer active...or at least they're mostly dead. Mostly.

If Gips' scan shows the tumors are still active, his oncologist wants to start chemo again right away, this time using a different cocktail of anti-cancer drugs. We expected that surgery would be the next step, but the oncologist feels it's an especially risky operation. We obviously have a lot more questions for the oncologist, but for now we just have to wait until we know the results of the scan.

In hindsight, I guess we always knew the RPLND was a possibility. Guess I'm just in shock.

It's an awful surgery, not gonna lie.

But when it's necessary, it's necessary.

Don't be like me, find someone who does it day in and day out.  Nothing worse than amateur hour surgeons.

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
I've read that Laprascopic is just not as effective yet. The RPLND's success rate is correlated to how many lymph nodes they can remove. Laprascopic, while more convenient to the patient, isn't that convenient to the doctor.

Also, the RPLND is also not a frequently performed operation. So finding an experienced doc can prove hard. And expensive. I've read that most doctors that do it only do a few a year and that even the most experienced ones get less than 1 a week.

RE: Furry little balls of Cancer
My PET scan came back clean. I'm free!

There was one spot that was brighter than they wanted, but its small and if you consider that normal cells register between 1 and 2 on this scale, and that this registered around 2.9, and that cancerous cells typically register between 15 and 25 I feel pretty good about it. I have another scan in 5 weeks.

Whew!
